One in three girls and one in four to six boys are sexually abused by age 18 (Finklehor, 1994)
In the U.S. in 2001, an estimated 86,830 children were victims of sexual abuse (DHHS, 2003)
The mean age of CSA victims is 9 to 11 years (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2005)
22% of CSA victims are under age 8 (www.darkness2light.org)
Middle childhood (approximately 7 to 12 years of age) is the most vulnerable period for CSA (Barnett et al., 2005)
The majority of CSA victims are female (DHHS, 2001), but boys may be abused more often than the data indicates, because they are less likely to report sexual abuse
Increased risk for CSA includes: the presence of a stepfather, living without one of their natural parents, interparental violence, family isolation, and a parent's prior history of sexual abuse (Barnett et al., 2005)
Unlike other forms of child abuse, socioeconomic status does not appear to be related to sexual abuse.
